![]() I simply hadn't walked in that direction yet! As an example of this I came across a prompt telling me how to dodge roll around hour 10 of the game. There are, of course, some tutorial markers near the opening area that teach you the basics of crafting and combat, but those are easily missable as the game opens wide open almost immediately. You simply emerge and then essentially need to figure things out. There isn't a whole lot of story or direction to DYSMANTLE. On combat, DYSMANTLE also keep things simple, making the wade through zombie encounters thankfully pretty short but definitely challenging at times. There's no hunger or thirst meters, weapons can't break, and your inventory is a smart balance of managing the limited amount of space in your backpack to figure out what to dump into crates at campsites scattered across the map, which have unlimited storage. All of the mechanics that usually annoy me in these games aren't there. Where DYSMANTLE creates an edge though is in its balance of survival systems. It feels like this exact kind of game has been done time and time again. ![]() All of the underground supplies have been exhausted, so you have to fend for yourself by foraging from the leftovers of civilization to craft tools, cook food, make clothes, and forge weapons to fend off hungry zombies. ![]() DYSMANTLE is a pretty amazing title, and the Underworld DLC is a welcome addition for new and old players alike.ĭYSMANTLE is a survival and crafting game where you play as a man emerging from a subterranian shelter years after the onset of the zombie apocalypse. Fast-forward to now where the game has recently been updated with a new expansion and I can hardly keep my hands off of it. A directionless open world zombie game just wasn't really gripping me in that moment, but I made plans to go back and check it out eventually. Thanks to the satisfying progression system, local co-op, and continued support from 10tons post-launch, Dysmantle is certainly worth a try for those looking for great indie games.ĭysmantle is available on Android, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.When DYSMANTLE initially came out, I bounced off of it pretty quickly. Players can access a mini island where they can safely build their own home base, complete with farming capabilities and a new Wrench tool for smashing more environmental objects in town. The $9 USD expansion also coincides with a major free update, Home Building. Players will be able to take advantage of this new feature in the base game once they've completed a certain quest in the Underworld. Of particular interest is the addition of fast travel capabilities between camps, a highly-requested feature that should alleviate the difficulties of navigating Dysmantle's open world. The cavernous Underworld environment also comes with all the new features expected of an open world expansion, such as quests to undertake and new enemy types to challenge, along with new equipment like the crossbow, sawed-off shotgun, and a classy 1930s pinstripe suit. Players can access Underworld's new content once they've left the gates of the game's first area. Underground rivers, trees, root systems, and giant glowing mana crystals come together to form an otherworldly environment that is refreshingly distinct from the ruined town above. The underground setting doesn't necessarily mean the environment is cramped and dungeon-like, however, as the Underworld is surprisingly open and populated with its own strange ecosystem. ![]() The new Underworld DLC has players leaving Dysmantle's post-apocalyptic landscape and heading into an expansive underground cavern system. RELATED: Survival Crafting Game Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria Announced A wide range of crafting options and the abundance of materials mean players are always making some form of progress no matter what they're doing. Players explore a sprawling open world, with progression tied to the dismantling of environmental objects for materials in order to build stronger weapons and tools. Dysmantle continues this tradition with its top-down twin-stick execution of the familiar crafting survival genre. 10tons' games tend to have an isometric, twin-stick control scheme as seen in roguelike shooter Neon Chrome and Judge Dredd-inspired JYDGE. Gamers looking for a fresh indie game to sink some time into may enjoy the crafting sandbox of Dysmantle and its new expansion.ĭysmantle was released in November 2021 after almost exactly one year in early access and quickly became 10ton's bestselling game on Steam despite the indie studio's already impressive collection of well-received titles. 10tons' isometric crafting exploration game Dysmantle has released its first DLC, Underworld, which takes players into a vast underground region where new quests, weapons, and enemies can be discovered.
